The 1990s Vs Today

Twenty years ago search engine optimization was a lot different than it is today. Back then search engines couldn’t understand natural language. In fact, one computer science teacher I, the author of this blog post, had in middle school was fond of saying, “Don’t ask search engines questions. They will just laugh at you.”

What he meant was that search engines couldn’t handle questions. So instead of giving you relevant answers, they “laughed” at you by displaying illogical results that were nowhere near what you wanted.

Search Engine Optimization has changed a lot in the last twenty years.

To find what you were looking for you had to use short phrases or words in your searches. If you wanted to know “what is the acronym to remember the planets?” you had to search “planets acronym.” Website marketers understood this and often optimized websites by peppering them with the one-two-word phrases people searched for. As long as they stuck to that small search word list their ranking was fine.

Then Ask Jeeves appeared on the scene. Ask Jeeves (now Ask.com) was started in 1996 by Garrett Gruener and David Warthen in Berkeley, California and was one of the first search engines that could process questions. You could ask it a full question and it responded with results that answered it. Google came two years later and started to their long-lasting change of the SEO game. Smartphones and voice assistants like Siri came thirteen years after, completing a big shift in website browsing.

Now, instead of being stuck using one-or two-word search phrases, people could put full sentences in the search bar to get answers.how long does SEO take to work

How Does This Change Search Engine Optimization Today

Because people searching the web are using a more natural language (and longer search phrases) websites need to follow suit. This means using longer search phrases along with their shorter ones. This also means that SEO doesn’t happen overnight. In order to do it properly and generate the leads you want, you need to know what long keywords people are using to search for businesses like yours.

People now use longer search phrases.

If anyone promises you they can do your SEO quickly, run. A good website marketing agency understands that to do your SEO right, they have to craft an SEO strategy that suits your website and the people searching for it. They won’t just randomly jam keywords in your website content, they’ll take the time to research which keywords to use, and the best ways to use them.

SEO results don’t happen overnight.

A good website marketing agency will also take the time to explain their SEO strategy so when you hear how it might take, you’ll know exactly why.
